Aesthetic Journalism: Reality and its Representation, 2010

talk, symposium, lecture

[View Video]
The 'Academic Discourse' series of public talks aims at deepening the understanding of photography beyond a mere mechanical reproduction by a common gadget, but as a medium that influence the way we perceive the world, and essentially a part of our lives. Over the past five years Alfredo Cramerotti has written about the aesthetic merger of contemporary visual art & photography practices and the news media. By adopting the ubiquitous tropes of graphic mapping and Magnum style photography, an increasing number of photographers and artists have borrowed from these visual languages to present their work in a context closely aligned with investigative journalism. Drawing from his recent book Aesthetic Journalism: How to inform without informing (2009, Intellect), Cramerotti will speak about the growing overlap between global news media and contemporary visual practices. Date/Time: Sat 16 October 2010, 2pm – 3pm Venue: Singapore Art Museum, Glass Hall Limited to 50 pax Speaker: Alfredo Cramerotti

Enjoy Poverty: Screening and Conversation with Alfredo Cramerotti and Renzo Martens, 2010

Nottingham Contemporary's screening and talk about Renzo Marten’s performance-cum-documentary, a challenging experience for the viewer. Shot in the Congo, it suggests that local photographers would be better off selling pictures of suffering to Western news agencies, rather than continuing their humble portrait studios. “Martens is keen to expose the relation of power between those who watch and those who are being watched,” stated the curator Alfredo Cramerotti, author of Aesthetic Journalism. Cramerotti will discuss this provocative film with Martens after the screening. Both will take questions from the audience.
