Premio Durello Award, 2011

Presentation of the Award to the artist Valentina Miorandi for “Inno Nazionale d'Italia”
- - - - - -

Borrowed Knowledge is a show in two parts: The Blind Image and The Public Library of Borrowed Knowledge. The show takes as its starting point an investigation into the construction of visual history and its relation to images and history’s claim to truth through two multifaceted works. The Blind Image brings together the film Amnesialand (2010), the artist’s most recent film Blind Image, a series of photos and display of books. The Public Library of Borrowed Knowledge will attempt to open up a participatory dialogue relating to the idea of knowledge production and cultural translation, initiating a collective working process for subsequent presentations.

Documentary images are a common method to measure and reflect on the monumental scale of change occurring in contemporary society. These images are also highly aestheticised, making beauty even of images of the most desolate slum or industrialised landscape. As a crossover point between art and journalism, the documentary image also allows us to question the veracity of world events from multiple viewpoints, often offering multiple uncomfortable realities instead of a single, easily-digestible worldview. In an era of a massive data onslaught that individuals struggle to cope with, the documentary image continues to offer us a human face on information, sometimes elegantly summarising a complex situation. But what balance needs to be struck between honest portrayals of reality and artistic license?
Perceptions of Practice: Photography, 2011
talk, seminar, debate
Perceptions of Practice: Photography is a series of workshops that set out to investigate what constitutes photographic practice today. The series promotes enquiry into contemporary photographic practice and its associated disciplines through placing presentations and discussions on established concepts of photographic tradition and the moving image alongside those arising from digital developments, such as the virtual camera, information clouds, network technology and the cultural consequences of photography as hyperobject.
